Middle East

Sugar & calorie reduction

Knowledge Building Programme

The programme is planned as part of the initiatives and collaboration between Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology UAE and UAE F&B Manufacturers Business Group to enhance and enable UAE Food and Beverage Manufacturing best practices with a special emphasis on the empowering UAE national SMEs from the F&B manufacturing sector. The programme’s technical support, knowledge building sessions and practical sessions are powered by Tate & Lyle via its extensive expert network and its technical center in Dubai UAE.

Background

Sugar and calorie reduction is the #1 health challenge in the GCC for both global and local food manufactures and especially SMEs. Regional manufacturers need to re-draw their strategies to offer healthier food and beverage products so that the region is able to contain highest obesity rates, translating into high diabetes rates and impacting the health of the residents. Government regulators are keen to promote better manufacturing techniques, methodologies and ingredients for new F&B products and regulations to incentivise food & beverage manufacturers and consumers to cut down on sugars using different tools - from tax policies to awareness campaigns.

The challenge

While there is a lot of hype around sugar and calorie reduction, and everyone is working actively to be part of the solution, there is a lack of thorough understanding of how to best achieve this goal. Regional government regulators and officials rely on manufactures to find their way around it, while manufacturers many times struggle to achieve the guidelines of the government. There is a disconnect coupled with back-and-forth pushbacks on what is feasible and what is not.

Middle East sugar & calorie reduction knowledge building programme

The programme is hosted with the following objectives:

  • - Bridge the sugar and calorie reduction knowledge gap between all stakeholders to increase the chances of success
  • - Increase the awareness of the latest technologies available in this field
  • - Bring practical experience to the challenge through working on specific prototypes in the newly opened technical center
  • - Ongoing technical support for any sugar and calorie reduction

The programme

The programme runs across 6 sessions – each session is for 2 hours, tackling different angles of sugar and calorie reduction.
